Who owns these domain names for sale?
Most domains for sale are owned by individuals who do not have use for these domains, or are interested in reselling domain they have purchased as investment. Some domains are also sold by registrars because their previous owner failed to renew them. These are called "expired" domains. Other domains are not being renewed.
